The Biggest IT Myths Exposed: What We Believe vs. Reality
Many people think the world of IT is simple.
Either everything works…
or it doesn’t.
But the reality is much closer to The Matrix.
If you’ve seen the movie, you remember the moment when Morpheus offers Neo a choice:
- the blue pill – everything stays the way we think it is
- the red pill – we see the real world
The world of IT operations and managed services is full of blue pills.
Assumptions.
Fears.
Long-standing myths.
And these myths often lead to poor IT decisions.
My name is Dr. IT, and during the IT Health Month campaign, I regularly speak with company leaders who share the same concerns about IT operations and outsourcing.
Let’s take a closer look at some of the most common IT myths—and the truth behind them.
Myth #1: “If we outsource IT, we lose control”
This is probably the most common fear companies have.
Many leaders believe that outsourcing IT operations means losing control over their systems.
In reality, modern IT services work very differently.
Professional IT service providers typically offer:
- continuous system monitoring
- detailed operational reports
- transparent workflows
- and clearly defined service level agreements (SLAs).
In many cases, companies actually gain more visibility into their IT infrastructure than before.
This is especially true when organizations use modern cloud-based infrastructure and Azure cloud solutions, which provide real-time insights into system performance and availability.
Control doesn’t disappear.
It becomes data-driven and measurable.
Myth #2: “Our data won’t be safe with an external provider”
Security concerns are another major reason companies hesitate to outsource IT services.
Many fear that working with an external IT partner could lead to:
- exposure of business secrets
- GDPR compliance risks
- unauthorized system access.
However, the reality is often the opposite.
Professional IT providers typically operate with strict security protocols and industry standards, including advanced cybersecurity solutions designed to detect and mitigate threats in real time.
The NIST Cybersecurity Framework also emphasizes the importance of continuous monitoring and risk management in modern IT environments.
Security doesn’t depend on whether the IT team is internal or external.
It depends on the processes, technologies, and governance behind it.
Myth #3: “Helpdesk support only works during office hours”
Many organizations still imagine IT support as something that only exists between 9 AM and 5 PM.
But modern businesses operate far beyond those hours.
Today’s IT systems:
- run overnight
- operate during weekends
- serve customers across multiple time zones.
As a result, modern IT support relies heavily on 24/7 monitoring and automated response systems.
According to Microsoft, proactive monitoring and automated infrastructure management are essential for maintaining stable and reliable IT environments.
Good IT operations don’t just react to incidents.
They prevent them.
Myth #4: “An external IT provider won’t care as much”
This myth is rooted in human psychology.
Many leaders feel that their own employees will naturally care more about company systems than an external provider.
However, modern IT service models operate on SLA-based performance metrics, which define:
- response times
- availability guarantees
- escalation procedures
- and monitoring requirements.
This structured approach often leads to more predictable and reliable IT operations than informal internal processes.
Myth #5: “Remote IT support is slower”
This is a myth left over from the early 2000s.
Some organizations still believe that if no technician is physically present in the office, problems will take longer to resolve.
In reality, modern IT tools enable:
- instant remote access
- real-time diagnostics
- automated issue resolution.
In many cases, issues are resolved before users even notice them.
This is especially true with modern IT monitoring and managed operations platforms, which continuously track infrastructure health and performance.
Terminator or Partner?
Another common fear is that automation and AI will eventually replace IT teams.
Like something straight out of The Terminator.
But the future of IT isn’t about replacing people.
It’s about enabling them.
Automation and AI allow IT teams to move beyond constant firefighting and focus on:
- innovation
- infrastructure improvements
- strategic business support.
In other words, technology becomes a partner, not a replacement.
Why IT Myths Are Dangerous
Many IT decisions are not made based on technology.
They’re made based on assumptions.
And when assumptions are wrong, the decisions built on them are often wrong as well.
That’s why the goal of IT Health Month is to help organizations better understand:
- what is a real risk
- what is simply a myth
- and what truly matters for modern IT operations.

We also created a video series where Dr. IT explores the most common IT myths in detail.
If you want to learn:
- which IT fears are justified
- which ones are just industry legends
- and what the real data says
then the series is worth watching.
Because in IT, just like in The Matrix, there comes a moment when you have to choose.
The blue pill… or the red pill.
IT Health Month – Dr. IT Is In
During the IT Health campaign, the experts at Gloster Cloud help organizations assess the health of their IT infrastructure.
